University of Arkansas Scholarships

Most of the University of Arkansas scholarships and financial aid that you receive may be used to study abroad on an approved study abroad program. If you plan to use your U of A academic scholarships, please inform the Academic Scholarship Office about your study abroad plans and schedule an appointment with your financial aid counselor to discuss your financial aid options.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students only need to complete ONE scholarship application in HogsAbroad to be considered for all available funding sources including:

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be accepted to a study abroad program to apply for scholarships?

No, you just need to have a program picked out and an application started- you don’t need to have a completed program application to submit for scholarships. Your scholarship application will ask you to articulate what program you’re doing and how it relates to your goals.

Can current scholarships be used to study abroad?

In most cases, yes. You should confirm your specific funding with the Financial Aid Office and Academic Scholarship Office. Regardless of what program you are doing, you are still a U of A student while you are abroad and will be enrolled in that academic term. You can receive any funds you have normally for that term.

Can New Arkansan/non-resident tuition awards apply to study abroad?

It depends. These scholarships only apply to University of Arkansas tuition, which is charges on direct UA Programs like the Rome Center, Exchange, and most faculty-led programs. Tuition discounts cannot be used for external programs because students do not pay U of A tuition to participate.

Can I use a U of A scholarship for an external program?

In most cases, yes. Work with your study abroad advisor to find an approved study abroad program and to ensure the courses taken abroad transfer to the university of Arkansas.

Can Federal financial Aid be used?

If your program meets certain criteria, yes. The program must be approved by the Study Abroad office and you need to be enrolled in a full-time course load during the period abroad. Federal aid includes, but is not limited to, Pell Grants, SEOG Grants, Stafford Loans, and Perkins Loans. Do not rule out federal aid if you have previously been unsuccessful. Because study abroad can increase your education costs, you may be able to receive a financial aid award.

Award Matching Programs

These programs offer students additional discounts based on other awards they receive.

Pell Grant eligible students are guaranteed extra discounts from SIT Study Abroad ($1,500) and Global Experiences Internships ($500).

GI Bill eligible students receive $250 (summer) or $500 (semester) additional discount from AIFS Abroad.

Gilman Scholarship recipients can receive additional discounts for AIFS and Global Experiences programs.

Boren Award recipients receive $250 (summer) or $500 (semester) additional discount from AIFS Abroad.

FEA Award recipients are eligible for $500 discounts for AIFS semester programs.

Selecting a program that helps achieve your long-term goals may make it easier to solicit funds from external sources. Keep in mind that local, regional, and national groups, as well as individuals, are all possible contributors; it’s also important to keep careful record of those who helped support you in order to express your appreciation. Finally, past study abroad students found that dedicating a set time each week to look for funding was really helpful. Below are some ideas to ponder.

Crowdfunding

Kickstarter.com: Sell poetry, art, etc. online to raise funds.
GoFundMe.com: Use this platform as a way for family and friends to donate to your study abroad program.
Go Old School: Bake sale, car wash, collect cans and bottles from neighbors
Identify yourself and your plans and save

Heritage Groups

Look for organizations with an interest in specific countries that may be willing to fund you. Are you a Native American? Do you have family members in Germany? Some groups fund students with your background, or offer scholarships to people like you who want to learn more about your heritage.

Go Local

Contact businesses, churches and organizations in your hometown, especially those whose mission may relate to your major, region of study, or another facet of your life. They may have scholarships or be willing to donate something toward your time abroad. You can offer to send letters while abroad or give a presentation upon return. Potential organizations include: Elks, Moose, Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary, etc.

Holidays

Ask for study abroad related gifts: luggage, backpack, money belt, camera, walking shoes, etc.

Frequent Flyer Miles

Ask friends and family if anyone is willing to give you some miles or buy your plane ticket with their miles.
