Tibetans in Exile: A Study Tour in India

Highlights & Photos

Since 1959, when the Dalai Lama fled Tibet, the Tibetan community has settled around the globe, but it is in India that this ancient and highly developed culture has taken root and made its extraordinary contribution to the contemporary world.

Now, under the personal guidance of Geshe Thupten Dorjee and Dr. Sidney Burris, students will be able to travel to India, gain access to monasteries seldom visited by Westerners, and participate in a ground‐breaking oral history project.

The project records and archives in digital form the life stories of the older Tibetan monks who remember Tibet as it once was, and who successfully made the perilous passage over the Himalayan mountains. These stories are quickly vanishing, never to be recovered.

Students spend time in the classroom in Arkansas, as well as tour New Delhi, the Indian coast, stopping at places like Goa and the Drepung Loseling Monastery, Dharamsala, the official residence of the Dalai Lama, and Agra, home of the Taj Mahal.
