"My name is Michael Howland, a sophomore undergraduate student in Civil Engineering, and this past summer I had the fortune of attending the 2009 Global India study abroad program through the College of Engineering.
In addition to traveling around India and learning about its diverse culture, the 11 students on the trip collaborated on an engineering project that really showed us students how to approach a problem with the skills and the expertise of an engineer.
For our project, we designed a portable dwelling that would alleviate the social and economic problem of the so-called "urban gypsy," a phrase used to describe slum-dwellers that live on the streets of overcrowded cities, living nomadic lives that follow work offers. This was a fantastic learning experience for all who attended and we wish to encourage current students and faculty members alike to get involved in this program and others like it."
