Program Description
Al-Akhawayn University (AUI) is a Moroccan university, grounded in the historic strength of African, Arab and Islamic culture. At the same time, it is modeled in its organizational structure, curriculum, method and language of instruction on the U.S. system of higher education. AUI is located in the resort community of Ifrane, nestled in the Middle Atlas Mountains. The region is known for its beautiful natural surroundings and is located less than 1 hour's drive from the historically rich imperial cities of Fez and Meknes . The intensive 8 week summer program offers students the opportunity to study North African culture and Modern Standard Arabic at the intermediate or advanced level.
Course Offerings/Descriptions
Two 4 week sessions provide a total of 6 credit hours of intensive intermediate or advanced Arabic. All courses are taught by AUI faculty. Students receive transfer credit upon receipt of the official transcript from AUI at the completion of the program.
Accommodations
Student will be housed in double occupancy rooms in AUI student resident halls. All rooms have en suite bathrooms with showers. Whenever possible, participants will have Moroccan roommates. Dorms are single sex and there is no visitation allowed by the opposite sex.
Program Costs
Estimated Program Fee $4,100
Program fee includes all instructional costs at AUI, room and board, international health insurance and administrative fees.
Fee does not include international airfare, passport fees, personal travel or incidental expenses.
Financial Aid/Scholarships
Partial scholarships for students currently enrolled at the University of Arkansas are available through the King Fahd Middle East Studies Program. These scholarships are intended for superior students with a high level of commitment to the Middle East Studies program who have completed at least two years of Arabic. Honors College students should apply for study abroad grants through the UA Honors College. Contact the UA Office of Study Abroad for applications and deadlines or visit the Honors website.
Eligibility
Students must have completed a minimum of 24 hours by the beginning of the program with a cumulative gpa of 2.6 or better. A minimum of two semesters of Arabic is required for acceptance to the program. Students will be given both pre and post program proficiency tests at Al-Akhawayn. Proficiency guidelines are those set by the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL). In addition, students will have to fill out an application to Al-Akhawayn upon approval at the UA.
Deadline
The application deadline is January 21, 2008. Applications will be considered after this date on a space available basis. A deposit is required upon acceptance into the program.
