Program Description and Photos
To really get a feel for what the Cuernavaca experience is like, you'll have to see the photos from the summer '07 program.
The University of Arkansas is pleased to be affiliated with the host instituition in Mexico, the Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey (ITESM), Campus Cuernavaca . ITESM-Cuernavaca is part of one of the largest and most advanced university systems of higher education in Mexico. The Cuernavaca campus enrolls approximately 100 international students each summer who share the campus with an additional 700+ Mexican students. The six week program provides students with the opportunity for full cultural and language immersion. Classes are taught by ITESM faculty.
Cuernavaca is known as the City of Eternal Spring and is located 1.5 hours by bus from Mexico City. With a local population of 800,000, it is famous for its vibrant climate and flora, and for its rich pre-Hispanic and Spanish colonial legacies, and its modern Mexican traditions. Capital of the state of Morelos, birthplace of revolutionary hero Emiliano Zapata, Cuernavaca and the surrounding area are home to such significant historical sites as the Pyramids of Teopanzolco and the Palacio de Cortes.
Course Offerings/Descriptions
Spanish language courses at all levels, Intermediate and above, are available, along with advanced courses in culture, literature, Business Spanish, International Business, and Latin American Studies. Most students will enroll in courses taught specifically for international students, but students with advanced language proficiency may also enroll in regular ITESM-Cuernavaca classes with Mexican students.
Participants may enroll for a maximum of 6 credit hours. Arkansas students are particularly encouraged to consider enrollment in the courses that have the following UA equivalencies:

- SPAN 3003: Advanced Spanish
- SPAN 3033/3103: Conversation & Cultural Readings
- SPAN 4003: Advanced Grammar
- SPAN 4233: Mexican Culture and Society
- SPAN 4333: Business Spanish
- PLSC 3573/LAST 470V: Latin American Political System
The Business Spanish course will include a number of field trips and site visits. For students wishing to further enrich their experience, community social service volunteer opportunities are also available.
Faculty
Dr. Steven Bell, sbell@uark.edu, Director of Latin American Studies at the University of Arkansas, will accompany the group and be on site for the first half of the program but the experienced staff at the ITESM will provide the instruction.
Accommodations
An essential part of the student experience is the homestay. Participants live with Mexican families in Cuernavaca. Most host families want to be highly involved in the lives of their foreign students. They want to help you learn and feel like part of their family. Students are provided with either a single or double occupancy room, and two meals per day (except on excursions). Most host families live within walking distance of the University, although some students will stay farther away from campus and need to ride the local bus to and from campus.
Field Trips
Immersion in the culture through day excursions and weekend field trips is considered an integral part of the program. Overnight trips are planned for the first two weekends. Trips planned last year were to Oaxaca and Acapulco with optional trips to Mexico City and Puebla.
