Program Description

Several civilizations and cultures have left an impressive collection of unique art and architectural masterpieces in Rome. This course is a month-long studio class designed for students to createvisual site-specific work (sketching, painting, photographing, collecting collage materials). The emphasis will be sketching. The program includes tours to many ancient sites, such as the Forum & Ostia Antica, Centro Storico or "Medieval Center", Renaissance & Baroque Rome (St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel) and museums specializing in ancient Rome: (the Vatican Museums, Galleria Borghese, and the Capitoline Museum). We also visit modern museums in each city as well as contemporary exhibits. Museum fees are included in the program fee.There will also be a week-long trip to Florence and Venice included in the program fee.
This program is intended for art majors or students with prior training in sketching or painting.

ART 695V Special Topics: Art in Rome (6 hrs. graduate variable credit course)
Students will keep a sketchbook/journal and make entries on a daily basis of experiences. A variety of portable materials will be explored: watercolor pencils, graphite pencils, conte crayon, charcoal, pastel, and mixed media. Master studies, imaginary and/or conceptual work will also be investigated. Work of a sustained nature or series of works are also part of the course of study.Work completed during and after the program will be exhibited in the UA Fine Arts Gallery the following fall.

Accommodations
Students and faculty are housed in the Residence Ponte Bianco, near Trastevere. The residence is well connected to all parts of the city by tram, bus and train. The rooms are double occupancy with kitchenette and private bath (mostly showers). The residence has easy access to neighborhood shopping areas and inexpensive "fast food" places with rosemary chicken, stuffed veggies, pizza & pasta, of course! The food is cheap and the best you'll ever eat!
Program Costs
Program Fee $ 2,800 + UA Tuition*
UA Tuition: $954.30 for 6 hrs Undergraduate or $1683.90 for 6 hrs Graduate
* Tuition discounts are not allowed
Program fee includes lodging and kitchen fees in Rome, museum entrance fees, administrative fees, lassroom and health insurance.
Fee does not include UA tuition, airfare, meals, art supplies, local transportation in Rome, passport and additional personal expenses.
Payment Schedule
Upon Acceptance to the Program:
Deposit $300 due by January 18, 2008
First payment $1,000 March 1, 2008
Second Payment $1,500 April 15, 2008
Tuition Payment $UA Tuition May 10, 2008
Withdrawal Policy:
Notification of withdrawal is required in writing to the Office of Study Abroad. Lack of written notification will result in the charging of the full fee to the student, regardless of the actual time of withdrawal.

Financial Aid/Scholarships
Financial aid and scholarships are available to UA students. Visiting students must apply for financial aid through their home institution. Honors Honors College students should apply for study abroad grants through the UA Honors College. Contact the UA Office of Study Abroad for application and deadlines or visit the Honors website.
Eligibility
Students must have completed a minimum of 24 hours by the beginning of the program with a cumulative GPA of 2.6 or better. Applicants should complete a brief interview with the program leader and they must be prepared to submit a small portfolio of their work. In addition, one academic recommendation from a faculty member or academic advisor is required.
Deadline
This program is limited to 10 students, so early application is advised. The application deadline is Jaunuary 21, 2008. Applications will be considered after this date on a space available basis. A deposit of $300 is required upon acceptance into the program.
