Program Description
This course is designed to immerse the student in a living classroom experience with the Japanese Economic System. The Japan Study Abroad Program is taught in English by Dr. Robert Stapp of the Walton College of Business. Students will have audiences with top executives of multinational companies such as Sanyo, Toyota Motor Company, Mazda, Sharp, Kirin, NEC, Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding, Daiwa Steel, Oyatsu along with various attaches of the US Embassy in Tokyo among others. Students will also visit the Arkansas Economic Development Commission. Cultural activities will include Rice Planting, Pottery, a Hanshin Tigers Baseball game, and martial arts such as Kendo (the way of the sword) and Kyudo (the way of the bow and arrow), Kodo (world renowned Taiko Drum Group) and Hibi Elementary School. Students will also have three nights of home stays with a Japanese family. Students will visit sites such as the Golden Pavilion, the Peace Park in Hiroshima, Todaij(the largest all-wood structure in the world housing the largest Buddha statue in Japan), Shinto Shrines, Himeji Castle, Matsuri Festivals and Hiezan Temple will be explored. We will visit the following cities: Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, Toyota City, Tamano City, Kameoka, Tokyo, Takayama and Sapporo.
Japan is a very beautiful and exciting country with extraordinarily friendly people. You will meet individuals from all walks of life including several CEO’s, VP’s, politicians, mom and pop restaurant owners, housewives, farmers, a world renowned potter, engineers and teachers. Students can enjoy the exciting nightlife of Tokyo known as the Paris of the Orient and certainly one of the world’s most energetic cities. Witness the lights of Ginza at the top of the most exclusive shopping districts in the world or visit Shibuya,the world’s busiest street crossing are just a few of the many opportunities available to students.

Six hours of credit at the undergraduate level. The program is intended for advanced undergraduate students in the Walton College of Business as well as interested students from other UA Colleges. The course will be taught in English.
Program Costs
Estimated Program Fee: $4,600 + UA Tuition*
UA Tuition: $1,046.58 (6 credit hours in-state undergraduate), $2,105.88 (6 credit hours in-state graduate)
*Tuition discounts are not allowed.
The program fee includes group airfare from Fayetteville and transfers within Japan, all lodging (double occupancy), some meals, cultural excursions, home stay with Japanese families, visits to multinational companies, guest faculty speakers and visits to various business sites.
Not included are UA tuition, passport fees, 1-2 meals per day, and personal expenses.

Financial aid and scholarships are available to UA students. Visiting students must apply for financial aid through their home university. Business College students should request funding from the Walton College of Business. Honors students should apply for study abroad grants through the UA Honors College. Contact the UA Office of Study Abroad for applications and deadlines or visit the Honors website.
Applicants must have completed a minimum of 24 hours by the beginning of the program with a cumulative GPA of 2.6 or better. One academic recommendation from a faculty member or academic advisor is also required. Applicants must also have completed ECON 2013/2023 or ECON 2143. Prospective students should contact Dr. Stapp by early October for the following year's summer program. Students will be interviewed and should display an academic record demonstrating maturity. Background research on the Japanese Economic System will start in November.
