"Bringing Health Care Together: Across Professions, Around the World”
Make sure and check out the group's pictures last summer!
Students are invited to enroll in a 6 credit hour course focusing on health issues during Summer Session 1, 2008. Following discussion groups and on study visits to various medical establishments during the Spring Semester and an intense week of team building and study on the UA campus in May, students and faculty will travel to Jönköping, Sweden for a close-up and personal look at medical practices and health care decision making. The trip will include site visits to area hospitals, as well as fieldtrips to Orëbrö, considered the deaf capital of Sweden, and Stockholm.
The course begins with a one-week orientation prior to leaving for Sweden. Focusing on one specific diagnosis, teams will see the role of various health care providers and experience the interdisciplinary cooperation that is fundamental to service delivery in health care. Visits to local hospitals, clinics and community organizations will provide exposure to critical care and health promotion issues within the US medical system. These same learning experiences will be provided to students in Sweden through our partnership with the School of Health Sciences at Jönköping University. Focusing on one specific diagnosis, teams will see the benefits and drawbacks of consumer purchased versus state provided health care.
Undergraduate health professions students from fields such as pre-med, nursing, gerontology, speech-language pathology and other pre-therapy majors are the target participants. Students in social work, psychology, business and engineering who wish to concentrate on health science may also be interested in this learning experience.
