Program Description
This new program at the world renowned Centre de Linguistique Appliquée (CLA) in Besançon,France offers students at all levels an intensive program in French language and culture. The CLA offers students cultural activities and afternoon trips to around the region as well as possible weekend trips to Dijon, Strasbourg, and surrounding areas.
The length of the program has been extended from 4 weeks to 5 weeks and the credit hours students earn from 6 hours to 7 hours.

The Centre de Linguistique Appliquée (CLA) is a world-renowned center for language learning. Founded in 1958, the CLA greets 3,000 students a year from all over the world to study French and other languages. Now a part of the Université de Franche-Comté, the CLA has increased its already solid research program in second language acquisition. UA students will take classes in French language and literature and enjoy the cultural activities organized by the CLA (theater, film, etc.),trips to Dijon, Strasbourg, and surrounding areas, as well as informal get-togethers with the young Bisontins (i.e., young people of Besançon).
Students will earn 7 hours of credit, which will vary according to the level of proficiency. See an advisor for details.
Faculty
Dr. Kathy Comfort of the French faculty at the University of Arkansas will accompany the group and be on site throughout the program but the experienced staff at the CLA, a center for excellence in language learning since 1958, will provide most of the instruction.
Accommodations
Students will be housed with French families, which will allow them to use what they learn in class.
The CLA organizes cultural activities several nights a week, such as soirées-cinéma, plays, concerts, and get-togethers with French students. Visits in region are planned, as well as weekend trips to Strasbourg, Dijon, and other surrounding areas. Besançon is a vibrant, bustling city so there is always something to do!
Program Costs
Estimated Program Fee: $4,350
What is included in the costs?
Program fee includes all instructional costs at the CLA for 5 weeks, room and board, airfare, international health insurance and administrative fees.
Fee does not include passport fees, personal travel or incidental expenses.
Payment Schedule
Upon Acceptance to the Program:
Deposit $300 due by February 1, 2008
First payment $1,500 due by March 15, 2008
Second Payment $2,550 due by April 22, 2008
Withdrawal Policy:
Notification of withdrawal is required in writing to the Office of Study Abroad. Lack of written notification will result in the charging of the full fee to the student, regardless of the actual time of withdrawal.

Travel
Group travel will be provided. More details on the dates and cost of the group trip will be announced in January 2008.
Financial Aid/Scholarships
Financial aid and scholarships are available to UA students. Visiting students must apply for financial aid through their home university. Honors College students should apply for study abroad grants through the UA Honors College. Contact the UA Office of Study Abroad for applications and deadlines or visit the Honors website.
Eligibility
Students must have completed a minimum of 24 hours by the beginning of the program with a cumulative GPA of 2.6 or better. Applicants are encouraged to meet with the program leader. One academic recommendation from a faculty member or academic advisor is required. In addition, students must fill out an online application from the CLA.
Deadline
The application deadline is January 21, 2008. Applications will be considered after this date on a space available basis. A deposit is required upon acceptance into the program.
