Program Description

Students from all majors are invited to spend six weeks in India this summer. The program will begin with a four day tour through Delhi, Agra (Taj Mahal) and Jaipur. The group will then fly to Bangalore where they will live and take classes at the International Center for Management and India Studies (ICMIS).  Working from Thomas Friedman's book, The World is Flat, students will investigate the international 365/24/7 workplace and the integration of science, engineering and business disciplines in the modern globalized economy, specifically focusing on the globalization in 'Silicon Valley' in India and its impact on urban and rural India.

UA instructors will join with professors from the host institution to offer classes in both Engineering and Humanites.  University of Arkansas faculty will lead a three hour course on Globalization in the Silicon Valley of India. No pre-requisites are necessary. This course will focus on technological innovations that have enabled globalization and a new paradigm for the international workplace through the integration of science, engineering and business. Course activities will include guest lectures and visits to local companies, videoconferencing with experts around the globe, and a service learning experience.

Students will select from two humanities courses focused on Indian culture, religion, or history for an additional three credit hours.  In addition to time in the classroom, students will have excursions around Bangalore and other cities in India (i.e. Agra, Jaipur, Delhi and Kerala). They will engage in both cultural and academic experiences, and they will spend time taking field trips to different industries.
