Program Description
This four-week, six credit-hour study tour of Greece will focus on significant works of art and sites relevant to the history and culture of Greece. To this end, we will visit important museum collections, and archaeological sites in the islands of Ithaca (home of Odysseus), Naxos, and Crete. We shall encounter many different kinds of sites, artifacts, and buildings including Healing Sanctuaries, Oracular Sites, Tholos Tombs, Pan-Hellenic Game Sites, Stadia, Mycenaean Citadels, Byzantine Churchs, Minoan Palaces, Mystery Cult Sites, Inscriptions, Temples, Fortifications, Sacred Caves, Battlefields, Vase Paintings, Sculpture, Theaters, Gymnasia, Medieval Citadels, Stoas, and more. In addition, we will encounter healing sanctuaries, pan-Hellenic game sites, Mycenaean citadels, Minoan palaces, Byzantine churches and monasteries, sacred caves, oracular sites, fortifications, battlefields, and religious pilgrimage sites, such as Eleusis.
U of A students should naturally be interested in Greece, because, as we all know, it is impossible to say "RAZORBACK" without saying "ZORBA."

Students will sign up for two of the courses above (six credit hours), and attend several required pre-trip meetings on the University of Arkansas campus to become familiar with the language and culture of Modern Greece, as well as to prepare for giving reports on-site. Professors will provide reading lists and report topic suggestions, and will work with students in preparation of these site reports, which students will prepare before departure. For each class, students will present an oral report on a topic related to the sites and artifacts we visit. Upon return, students will write a take-home examination, and, in consultation with the professor, write two short papers, due by the end of the second summer session. Grades will be determined equally on the basis of the examination, oral reports, final papers, and participation in all activities (including pre-trip meetings).
