Program Description

To get an idea of what the students did last year, check out these 2007 pictures by Roberto Noensie!  Get an idea of what you'll encounter in Belize with this video clip from PBS' Frontline.

In cooperation with Peacework, University of Arkansas faculty from numerous fields will accompany students to Dangriga, Belize, Central America to show how multiple disciplines interact in a community. 

Service projects are available in engineering, agricultural development, social work, literacy studies, conservation ecology, international economics, and education and health professions. Students from all majors are invited to participate!

Accommodations

While in Dangriga, students will be staying in hotels (some rooms have air-condition upgrade possibilities, most do not).  It is possible that students could stay in homestays or rented houses during some excursions.  For most meals, local women will be cooking large meals for the group dinners, vegetarian options will be available.  There are also some restaurants in the area (Chinese, Thai, burgers, etc).  Please note: you will want to bring bug spray and light, long sleeves to ward off any unwelcome advances by insects.

 

Program Costs

Estimated Program Fee:  $3,975 + UA Tuition

UA Tuition:  $954.30 for 6 hrs FULB UG ($1683.90 for FULB GRAD) or $1087.92 for 6 hrs WCOB UG ($2189.04 for WCOB GRAD)

The program fee includes round trip airfare,  lodging, some meals, local transportation to project sites, and two weekend excursions.

Not included are passport fees, remaining meals, books, personal travel and incidentals.

 

Payment Schedule 

Deposit                    $ 300            due by February 1, 2008
First payment         $ 1,000            due by March 1, 2008
Second Payment     $ 2,675            due by May 1, 2008
UA tuition Payment $ UA Tuition     due by May 15, 2008


Withdrawal Policy:

Notification of withdrawal is required in writing to the Office of Study Abroad.  Lack of written notification will result in the charging of the full fee to the student, regardless of the actual time of withdrawal.

Financial Aid/Scholarships

Financial aid and scholarships are available to UA students.  Visiting students must apply for financial aid through their home university.  Honors College students should apply for study abroad grants through the UA Honors College.  Contact the UA Office of Study Abroad for applications and deadlines or visit the Honors website.

 

Eligibility

Applicants must have completed a minimum of 24 hours by the beginning of the program with a cumulative GPA of 2.6 or better.  Applicants must also successfully complete the Community Development in A Global Context: Belize course during the Spring term.

 

Deadlines

The enrollment deadline is February 1, 2008 (must be enrolled in HUMN 4253/ WCOB 4103/ AFLS 4013 for Spring term).  Students are expected to put down a $300 deposit by February 1, 2008 if accepted.
